Let me tell you about my job. I am the Web Manager for web site of the Mason School of Business here at the College of William & Mary.
As a web manager, I have to be many things: A people person, computer geek, fixer, photo editor, headline writer, teacher, Twitterer and all-around problem-solver. Sometimes all in the same day. And it’s all good.
In a typical day, I may ask – very nicely — a content producer (also known as a person) to add upcoming events to the site, help someone with formatting a table on a page or crop photos to appear on our homepage. Then I might create an item about an alumnus in the news (with a catchy headline) and post it on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and BusinessWeek Exchange.
While I’m eating my lunch, I’ll log into Google Analytics to look at the traffic data for our site. Did you know that visitors to mason.wm.edu come from 117 different countries?
As the day wears on, I may train a content producer (you know, a person) how to use Cascade, the content management software that runs our web site. Or perhaps there might be new videos that need to be edited and uploaded on our site, then work with the good folks on the W&M Web Team on a new application for our site.
Because our site is constantly changing with new content and technology, every day brings new tasks, challenges and occasionally, problems. That’s just the way I like it – it’s all good.
