With her easy smile, her passion for healthcare, and love for photography, Kelly Lamping is a woman of many dimensions and the perfect choice for to wrap up interviews with the Mason School of Business Full-Time MBA Class of 2013.
Where in the US are you from?
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Why did you decide to come for an MBA and why Mason?
I knew in undergrad that I wanted to get an MBA after I worked for a few years. My older brothers gave me a good piece of advice: take your GMAT while you are still in undergrad (and in study mode) because the scores last for five years. All of my work experience has been in the IT field and I knew that an MBA would provide me with the skill set to become a well-rounded leader.
I chose Mason because of the quality of the school, the amazing faculty, and the executive partners program. I also knew I wanted to be closer to home after living in New Jersey for four years (no offense to my Jersey classmates!).
What has been the best part of your MBA experience?
The people. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with and getting to know so many diverse people. Everyone has something different to bring to the table. I think I learned just as much from my classmates as I learned from my professors.
Do you have any advice for the first years and prospective students?
Work with as many different people as you can during your time here. In the business world you will be forced to work with people that have different personalities and work styles from your own. Business school is a safe environment for you to learn how to successfully work with anyone. Also, go on at least one study abroad trip – they’re fantastic!
What is next for you after graduation?
My husband and I are moving to Virginia Beach (home is where the beach is!) and I will be working in the healthcare field.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
When you are not dealing with assignments and school work, how do you relax?
Lots of sleep! Also cooking, photography, and spending time with my husband Jason, my dog Josie, and my friends.
We know photography is one of your passions? Any plans to do this professionally someday?
I would love it if someone paid me for my pictures! I need to take a few professional photography lessons and build up a portfolio. For now I just enjoy taking pictures for friends and family.
Thank you Kelly. We can’t wait to hear about the amazing things you will achieve.
